Assumption Veterans Memorial
In early 2011, the Assumption VFW and American Legion Posts decided that a fitting memorial should be built to honor the people from Assumption who served our country. A committee was appointed consisting of members from both organizations: Norman Bethard, John Bonn, James Bugg, Ron Mink, Carl Puckett, and Bill Sullivan. The committee selected Robert Dondeville, a Vietnam veteran, who designed the Mt. Zion Veterans Memorial, to develop a fitting design for an Assumption Veterans Memorial. The Memorial, which will be built in the Women’s Club Railroad Park on Chestnut Street halfway between 1st Street and 2nd Street facing the business district, will have a center monument flanked by granite stones with inscribed names. The graceful depiction of his vision can be seen in his artwork above.
Many people and organizations have donated to date. If you are one of those, we thank you. We have estimated that it will take about $80,000 to complete the project. For a community of our size, this is a big undertaking, but we feel that the Assumption community wants to be proud of the monument that honors their veterans. What price can you put on Captain Joe Smith, Sergeant Tim Bodden, or Sergeant Bill Rohweder who gave their lives so we can be free?
Donations of any size are welcome. For tax deduction purposes, checks should be made out to the VFW or the American Legion and noted for the Assumption Veterans Memorial. Checks may be given to any committee member or deposited with the First National Bank of Assumption, 141 N. Chestnut St., Assumption, IL 62510.
To make a donation via mail please send it to:

A very important undertaking for the committee is to collect the names that are engraved on the Memorial stones. Any service person who ever lived in the Assumption area is eligible to be included on the Memorial. To view a list of Veterans whose names are currently engraved on the Memorial please click HERE. If you are aware of people who are not included, please let us know by calling us at 217-226-4127, emailing the information to bethardnj@consolidated.net, or mailing it to the address above. The list will be continually updated.
